Silviculture Systems Flashcards
What is a silviculture system?
A suite of silviculture methods designed to meet specific management objectives.
How are forests managed at the base level
stands are managed to achieve a specific structure that is designed to meet management objectives.
What would be the desired structure to achieve max yield?
even aged, optimally spaced, same species, uniform stands
What would be the desired structure on if you were managing a sensitive site?
Uneven age stands, multiple species, large spread in tree size.
What are the 3 broad silviculture system categories?
- Even Age
- Uneven Age
- Transition
What is important to keep in mind when managing for specific wildlife species?
Many species depend on a certain serial stage. When you leave a stand “as is”, it develops into a later seral stage and may lose existing intrinsic values that support the existing wildlife communities.
What are the 3 main steps of any silviculture system
Step #1: reproduction (stand removal)
Step #2: regeneration
Step #3: stand tending and protection
Why might you allow a stand to surpass its culmination age?
If you were managing for a specific habitat type for wildlife.
What are the 5 types of common rotations?
- Normal rotation (culmination)
- Pathological rotation (species prone to loss by decay are targeted at an earlier age)
- Technical rotation (specific product)
- Ecological rotations (stand harvested in such a way that it meets the desired structure needed for specific ecological values)
- Economic (slightly shorter than natural rotations) dependent on rate of return.
What is “expected rate of return”?
An acceptable rate of return decided by LM. Tree is left in ground until rate of return is achieved.
-you can get a higher rate of return by harvesting a few years before culmination.
What are the even aged systems?
Clearcut Retention Seed tree Shelterwood Coppice
What is coppice with standard?
coppice system used for trees that are suited to it while others are planted.
What are the uneven age systems?
Single tree selection
Group selection
coppice with standards
What are 2 variations of the CC?
Dispersed patch and progressive strip
