Q

Define forest “stand”

A

A grouping of vegetation (TREES) that has relatively homogenous features with respect to….

  • species mix
  • age class
  • Stems Per Hectare
  • Avg DBH
  • Avg Height
  • Volume per hectare
  • Crown class
  • Snags per hectare
  • Grown vegetation type

Q

What are the 3 Critical Rules of Silviculture?

A
  1. Maintenance of site ecological integrity
  2. Silviculture plans must account for the species silvical characteristics
  3. Silviculture plan must be developed to meet the forest estate owners objectives

13
Q

What are the 3 main phases of a silvicultural system? Briefly describe each.

A
  1. Reproduction phase: The pattern and sequence of tree removal in order to address the regen phase. Objective is to reproduce or emulate a stand similar to the one removed.
  2. Regeneration phase: (planting) Intended to establish the new stand.
  3. Tending and Protection phase: Intended to enhance site productivity as well as stand value.

Q

Define silvicultural practices and give some examples.

A

Activities designed to enhance the objectives of the silviculture system being used such as…

  • Site preparation
  • Artificial regen (planting)
  • Vegetation management (brushing)
  • Pruning

16
Q

What is a shelterwood system?

A

A silvicultural system where the existing stand is removed in a series of cuts to achieve a new even aged stand under the cover of the remaining trees. Generally used on sensitive sites where crown cover is needed to protect site quality and generally encourages shade tolerant species.

17
Q

What is the definition of an even aged stand?

A

When all trees in a stand are within 20% of the rotation age in either direction.
ex. 100yr old stand can be even if trees are at least 80 and not above 120 years old.

18
Q

What kind of forest estates do we have in BC?

A
TFL
TSA
WLL
Drainage
Park
19
Q

What does stand level management refer to?

A

Forest level management applied to individual stands to reflect the landowners objective.

20
Q

What is the difference between interspecific competition and intraspecific competition?

A

Intraspecific - competition between individuals in a species (Dense stand of lodgepole pine stagnate growth)
Interspecific - competition between one species and another
(Alder outgrow Fd and form a canopy over them, effectively stunting their growth by shading them out)

21
Q

Why is genetics an important factor in silviculture?

A

Understanding genetics allows foresters to assess which trees will do best on a given site. Genetics determine a tree’s adaptability.
