If Septicaemic signs predominate: DO NOT attempt LP, give Ceftriaxone 2G BD IV (for adults and children >40kg) [Ceftriaxone 80MG/kg for infants and children <40kg] and get help from critical care team.

If Meningitic signs predominate: Dexamethasone 4-10MG QDS IV

What is Wernicke’s dysphasia? Which area of the brain is affected in Wernicke’s dysphasia?

A

Wernicke’s dysphasia is receptive dysphasia, when patients become impaired in reading, writing, and comprehension. May be mistaken for psychotic speech.
Area affected is posterior superior temporal lobe

What is the treatment for these patients?

A

Listeria monocytogenes cause meningitis in patients >50yo, in those with alcohol dependency, in immunocompromised individuals and in neonates.

Add Amoxicillin 2G six times a day IV + Gentamicin 80MG TDS IV to Ceftriaxone 2G BD IV.
