Anatomy Flashcards
Which gyrus is involved in hearing? Which lobe is this gyrus located in?
Heschl gyrus
Located in the temporal gyrus
The ventral stream is involved in?
The dorsal stream is involved in?
Ventral stream is the ‘what’ pathway.
Dorsal stream is the ‘where’ pathway.
What is the gyrus found on the medial aspect of the temporal lobe?
Fusiform gyrus
What is the function of the fusiform gyrus?
Primarily involved in the higher functions of vision.
Another name for “lateral fissure”?
Sylvian fissure
Which cortex is affected early in Alzheimer’s Disease?
Entorhinal cortex (in the middle temporal lobe)
Stimulation of amygdala causes?
Feelings of fear and anxiety
What are the structures involved in the Papez Circuit?
Cingulate cortex, Hippocampus, Mammillary bodies/Hypothalamus, Anterior nuclei of thalamus
What is damaged in conduction aphasia?
Arcuate fasciculus is damaged, or superior longitudinal fasciculus
What can lead to hydrocephalus?
- Neoplasms in the ventricular system: Primary or metastatic
- Congenital deformities
- Blockage in the ventricular system: Eg Colloid cyst in the third ventricle can lead to blockage of the foramen of Monro.
- Tumour of the choroid plexus –> Leads to excessive production of CSF
Where are the arteries and veins located in the brain?
Arteries are in the subarchnoid space, veins are in the subdural space
What is the difference between the vascular supply of the cerebral cortex and the white matter?
Cerebral cortex is supplied by a rich network of arterioles and anastomosing capillaries, but the white matter is dependent on scattered, long perforating arterioles only.
