Cullen sign
bruising around the umbilicus (periumbilical ecchymosis) indicated intraperitoneal hemorrhage.
Grey turner sign
bruising along the side of the abdomen (flank ecchymosis) indicates retroperitoneal hemorrhage.
murphy’s sign
pain just below the right costal margin on inspiration with palpitation, indicative of cholecystitis
Kehr’s sign
pain in the tip of the shoulder due to presence of blood or other irritants in the peritoneal cavity when a person is lying down with the legs elevated, a symptom of ruptured spleen.
Homan sign
pain and tenderness of the calf muscle on dorsiflexion of the foot, signifies deep vein thrombosis
Mcburney’s point/sign
a point in the right side of the abdomen that is one third the distance from the anterior superior iliac spine to the umbilicus (navel), this is an approximate location of the appendix.
Lhermitte sign
strange electric sensation down the spine or extremities when the head is flexed forward, Indicative of multiple sclerosis.
Dunphy sign
severe abdominal pain in the right lower quadrant when coughing, in evaluation for peritonitis.
rovsing sign
deep palpation left lower abdominal quadrant, the PT will then have right lower abdominal pain (appendicitis/ peritonitis.
kernigs sign
Flexing the thighs at the hips at 90 degrees, assessing if extension at the knees is painful or meets resistance. significant for irritated meninges or subarachnoid hemorrhage.
Brudzinski sign
positive if individual involuntary flexes their hips and knees after voluntary neck flexion, significant for meningeal irritation.
