rare/unique medical conditions Flashcards
Thrombocytopenia
Low level of platelets in the blood
Polycythemia
THICK BLOOD
Caused by excess red blood cell production
COPD pt’s can have
poliomyelitis
viral neuromuscular disorder
affects the nerves related regulation of ventilation which can result in paralysis.
hypertensive encephalopathy
brain dysfunction due to significantly high blood pressure.
confusion, headaches, weakness, can present with similar stroke symptoms.
pancytopenia
low leves of all blood counts, (platelets, rbc, wbc etc..)
cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome
cyclical vomiting syndrome, abdominal cramping usually relived by taking hot showers
holiday heart syndrome
also known as alcohol induced atrial arrythmias, irregular heart rhythms associated with high levels of ethanol alcohol consumption.
pickwickan syndrome
known as obesity hypoventilation syndrome. Respiratory compromise caused by morbid obesity, characterized by sleep apnea, and s/s of hypercapnia
guillian barre syndrome
progressive muscle weakness and paralysis advancing up from the body from the feet, can result in ineffective breathing if the paralysis reaches the diaphragm
amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (lou Gehring disease)
causes progressive muscle weakness, disease is fatal with death usually attributable to respiratory failure as the muscles of respiration become unable to maintain adequate ventilation.
botulism (clostridium botulinum)
rare disease caused by the bacteria, will result in muscle paralysis and is fatal when reaches the muscles of respiration. can happen sometimes in infants when given raw honey that is unpasteurized.
thrombocytosis
when body produces too many platlets
pleocytosis
elevated WBC count in CSF
thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura
blood disorder in which blood clots form all over the body in small blood vessels which can lead to serious complications.
