Significant Figures Flashcards
Significant Figures
All objects measured have some degree of uncertainty associated with it
We can determine the accuracy of a number by the number of significant figures it contains
Non-zero digits
All non-zero digits are always significant
Zeros between non-zero numbers
Zeros that are between non-zero numbers are always significant
Leading zeros
Leading zeros (at the beginning of a number) are never significant; their job is to place the decimal point
Trailing zeros
Trailing zeros (at the end of a number) are significant only if the number has a decimal point
Zeros to the right of a decimal
Zeros to the right of a decimal and after a non-zero are significant
