Corrosion & Combustion Flashcards

1
Q

Corrosion

A

Chemical property
Refers to the slow chemical change that occurs when a metal reacts with oxygen from the air to form a new substance called an oxide

Q

Rusting

A

The reaction of iron with oxygen to form iron oxide
Porous nature which enables it to absorb water like a sponge
As a result, it dissolves or flakes off leaving another layer of fresh metal underneath to be attacked by oxygen
This process continues until the rust has eaten its way through the metal

Q

Preventing Corrosion

A

1) Paint the surface of the metal
2) Attaching another metal that is easier to corrode than iron
3) Using a special alloy of steel (made by mixing iron with nickel and copper)
4) Use material that have different chemical properties

Q

Fossil Fuels

A

Formed from plants, animals, and microorganisms that lives millions of years ago
Fossil fuels are a mix of other substances and sometimes combustion is not efficient due to a lack of oxygen or heat.
Coal, oil, natural gas
