Compounds Flashcards
Ionic Compounds
Consist of at least 1 metal and 1 non-metal
Have similar properties
High melting point
Form crystals
Dissolve in water to form solutions that conduct electricity
Form when an electron moves from a metal atom over to a non-metal atom
Naming ionic compounds
Name the metal ion first
Name the non-metal ion 2nd by changing the ending to ‘-ide’
Molecular Compounds
When non-metals combine
The atoms share electrons (covalent bond)
Can be solid, liquid, or gas at room temperature
Have low boiling point
Naming molecular compounds
Name same as ionic, however if a subscript number appears after an atom we include prefixes
2-di, 3-tri, 4-tetra, 5-penta, 6-hexa
When naming a molecular compound, always name the non-metal that is further left on the periodic table first
If 2 non-metals are in the same family, always name the one closer to the bottom of the periodic table first
Multivalent Elements
Transitional metals and some other elements have more than 1 ion charge
Therefore, can make different compound with the same element
When naming we use roman numerals to tell the difference between ion charge
