Matter Flashcards
Matter
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space
We categorize properties of matter into physical or chemical
Divided into metals and non-metals
Physical Properties
A physical property describes a characteristic of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the composition of matter.
Colour
The light of a substance reflects give it colour
Luster
Shiny or dull
Texture
The feel, appearance, or consistency of a substance
Conductivity
The ability of a substance to conduct electricity or heat
Conductor
A substance that conducts electricity
Insulator
A substance with little or no conductivity
Density
The amount of mass in a given volume of a substance
Ductility
Ability to be stretched into a long wire
Hardness
Refers to the substance’s ability to resist being scratched
Measured on the Mohs hardness scale from 1-10
Malleability
Able to be pounded or rolled into sheets
Viscosity
The resistance of a fluid to flow
Melting Point
The temperature at which a substance melts
Boiling Point
The temperature at which a substance boils
Solubility
Ability of a substance (solute) to dissolve into a solvent
Solute
Substance that is being dissolved
Solvent
Substance that is the dissolving medium
Chemical Properties
A chemical property describes the ability of a substance to change into a new substance or substances.
Combustibility
Ability of a substance to burn (requires oxygen)
Light Sensitivity
Change when a substance interacts with light
Decomposition
Happens when a reaction breaks a substance down into the parts that make it up
Reactivity
With oxygen, acid, or another substance
Alloy
Mix of metals
