Significance test #1 Flashcards
What are the branches and sub-branches of philosophy, and what kind of questions does each one deal with?
he three main branches are Metaphysics, - deals with questions about the nature and purpose of things. The 2 sub branches are Ontology that deals with the nature of things and Teleology that deals with the purpose of things.
Axiology- Deals with the questions of value( What is the value of physical activity in human life) 2 sub branches are Ethics deals with questions of right and wrong and Aesthetics deals with questions about beauty.
Epistemology- Deals with questions concerning what we can know and how we know it.
What is philosophy? Briefly explain the difference between philosophy and rhetoric
Philosophy is the art and science of Wondering about reality, posing questions related to that wonder and pursuing answers to those questions in a reflective manner. The difference between philosophy and Rhetoric is that philosophy is not trying to falsely persuade someone that your beliefs are the best.
Clearly define the 2 types of value that physical activity can have for human beings? Give clear examples of each type, and explain the importance that each has for kinesiology professionals who are explaining the value of physical activity for human beings.
Extrinsic value which is something that motivates you other than yourself to do something can be used as a means to an end (ex- Using sports to get a scholarship- using it for health and fitness benefits building character through sports)
intrinsic value is yourself motivating you to do something. ( ex- playing for the love of the game, exercising for pure enjoyment, PA has a meaningful part of life.)
If PA is not intrinsically valuable it is not likely that the person will participate over a long period of time.
According to “Exercise & Sport Science in 20th Century America,” the primary values of PE/Kinesiology vary according to time and place. Historically, which socio-cultural factors played a role in changing the field during the 1900’s?
he factors that played a role are in the early 1900’s Pe teacher programs were established
in the 20’s and 40’s games and sports began to rise is HS and College and a increase for physical educators and coaches began to be demanded research in areas of exercise and physiology and assessment
After WW2 there was an increased emphasis on health and fitness president Eisenhower’s heart attack brought national attention to heart disease and cardiac rehab.
the 60’s PE/Kinesiology were criticized for lacking focus and a strong discipline knowledge PE and Kinesiology saw an increase in research creations of sub disciplines and specialties
According to “Exercise & Sport Science in 20th Century America,” how did PE/Kinesiology in higher education change after 1963?
an increase in emphasis on research
administrative & curricular reorganization of departments
creation of sub-disciplines & specialties
Specialization which led to the fragmentation of knowledge in PE/Kinesiology
Should Kinesiology professionals see themselves as part of a larger community? Why or why not?
Kinesiology professionals should always see themselves as part of larger communities of professionals dedicated to improving the lives of those they serve through education and action.
What is Kinesiology? What is its focus? What sub-disciplines are included within it?
it is a interdisciplinary discipline in which physical activity is studied using various research methods and types of knowledge
The sub disciplines are Exercise physiology, Biomechanics, Motor Behavior, Sport and exercise physiology, Sociology of PA, History of PA, Philosophy of Pa
Identify the 4 core elements that the American Kinesiology Association believes that undergraduate Kinesiology programs should include.
Pa in Health, Wellness and quality of life
Scientific Foundations of PA, Cultural, Historical and Philosophical Dimensions of PA, The practice of PA
Explain why the discipline of Kinesiology fits well into a liberal arts framework?
Human movement is universal many movement forms are culturally popular movement is a primary focus of kinesiology movements can be studied using methods from a variety of liberal arts disciplines
Describe The College at Brockport’s PE Major during the 1990s. What classes were included in this major? (Note: You do not need to know course numbers.)
2 advanced skill courses, Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, Sport history, Sport Psychology, Sport Sociology
What rationale did The College at Brockport’s PES faculty give for curricular revisions to the 1990s PE major?
Broader focus to meet student needs, create programs that help people learn to live healthy lives as adults, Serve populations between ages of 25-65 in private and semi private sectors increases physical activity, decrease compartmentalization of knowledge, Changing role of PE subdisciplines
According to The College at Brockport’s PES faculty of the 2000s, what characteristics and knowledge should a physically educated person have? What 6 different PES courses made up the core of the PE major during the 2000s? (Note: You do not need to know course numbers.)
A physically educated person should have
