How do you act on Irregular Signals?
Home, Disc, Dwarf:
- Attempt to stop
- advise Controlling Signaller or
TC
- Receive correct Authority to
pass
Automatic
- Attempt to Stop
- Advise TC
- if train stops prior to Signal,
R1 S3
- if it doesn’t, advise TC re
tripping in vicinity of Fixed

What happens when a HOME Signal is Defective at Proceed?
Obscure Lights
2 ATWS placed 10m apart at sufficient distance
Flag Person exhibits RED/Stop hand signal and advise Driver of situation
PA announcement
Obtain correct authority from Controlling Signaller
Proceed with Extreme Caution to next signal
What happens when a DISC/DWARF Signal is Defective at Proceed?
Obscure Lights
No ATWS
Flag Person displays RED hand signal under instruction of CS and inform driver of situation
Obtain correct authority to pass
What happens when a AUTOMATIC Signal is Defective at Proceed?
Obscure Lights
2 ATWS placed 10m apart at sufficient distance
Flag Person exhibits RED hand signal and advise Driver of situation
PA Announcement
Pass as per R1 S3
Proceed with Extreme Caution to next fixed signal
What happens when Home, Disc and Dwarf Signals Revert to Stop before passing?
Attempt to stop
Contact Controlling Signaller or TC
PA Announcement
Obtain necessary Authority to continue or set back behind Signal
No COMMS - Wait to be contacted
What happens when an Automatic Signal reverts to Stop before passing?
Attempt to stop prior to Signal
Contact TC
once authorised pass signal at STOP as per R1S3
If fail to stop prior to signal follow the rule for Tripping in the vicinity of a Fixed Signal
What happens for Wrong Routing?
Communicate with Controlling Signaller
If unable to stop prior to signal:
act under instructions of Signaller
This may involve:
- Set back behind the signal; or
- Continuing on the wrong route
If setting back:
PA announcement
Change Ends
Setback with the correct authority
Continue as instructed
What should you do if your train is routed onto an unwired track?
Apply Emergency Brake attempting to stop short of the end of Overhead
Lower Pantographs to prevent damage to Pantographs or Overhead
What happens when there is Failure Of Illuminated Letter A, in a Metrol Controlled Area?
Stop
Contact Area Controller
They will ascertain if Switched In or Out
Pass as per R1 S3
No COMMS - Train Over Time in Section TOTS

If unable to contact Signaller, contact TC to ascertain if switched In or Out
