What do you need to remember if you are required to pass a signal at DANGER?
The reason must be authorised by the rules
You must receive instruction/authority from
- Signaller
- TC
- AC, or
- Competent Employee
before passing any Home or Dwarf signal at Danger

Transmitted - recorded
Dictated - driver has to write it down. If you don’t have a copy of the form any piece of paper is ok.
(Drivers and Signaller must exchange names for recording purposes)

What authority do you need for Single Line Working?
Verbal authority from Pilot
What is Single Line Working
When there is work happening on a double line. The Home signals protecting the entrance to the section are ‘sleeved’ at STOP
A Competent Employee is appointed as Pilot. The Pilot gives Driver verbal instructions to enter the Single Line Working Area.
The Driver must be given opportunity to peruse the Single Line working forms.
The Signal to exit the single line is controlled by Signaller for that location. In absence of Signal, the Driver will receive a Green hand signal from a Competent Employee at that location. The Pilot CANNOT authorise the Driver to pass a Signal protecting the exit of the section,
What is the procedure if detained at a Home Signal at stop?

- Expected duration

- If Blocking/Sleeving facilities have been

What must you never assume about an Automatic Signal at Danger?
Never assume it is Defective
Treat the Track Section as being occupied, obstructed or damaged
At no time is a Signaller, TC, or anyone permitted to indicate to a Driver that an Automatic Signal is defective when it is in the STOP position.

What is the procedure for passing an Automatic Signal at STOP?
R1 S3
Check whether track is Occupied, Obstructed or Damaged
Check condition of train (braking, gradient, faults, defective/isolated equipment)
Check weather conditions/visibility (fog, graffiti, sun glare)
Call R1 S3 Phone number (5-3599) - (reminds you of rule and provides info for audit)

PA Announcement - Sudden stop

Proceed at Extreme Caution until the WHOLE TRAIN has passed the next fixed signal

AUTOMATIC SIGNALS
During R1 S3 what do you do if you decide visibility is too poor or defective equipment makes it too dangerous?
Driver is not required to pass the Signal at Stop until it changes to Proceed or until it is safe to do so.
The Driver must advise the Train Controller of the circumstances for not proceeding.

During R1 S3 what do you do if you cannot make contact with R1 S3 phone service?
The Driver may proceed to the next step in the rule after waiting for 30 seconds. If signal still at STOP proceed with next step.

During R1 S3 what do you do if the Automatic Signal improves to proceed during transmission to phone service?
Driver must state “Signal Cleared” and may then proceed according to the Signal Aspect.
Note all of the details and submit Incident Report.

Driver must recall the number and state “signal cleared”
What is the definition of Extreme Caution?
Maximum speed of 25kmh or posted track speed if it is the lesser.
Being able to stop the train in half the distance that can be seen ahead.
And always expecting to find the section ahead Occupied, Obstructed or Damaged.

What should you never do while performing a R1 S3?
DO NOT BE DISTRACTED
If TC call - stop the train
If receive PEI call - stop the train
If accompanied in cab by Driver who is talking - stop the train
If you have a coughing fit - stop the train
If it starts raining heavily - stop the train

when performing
R1 S3 and travelling to next signal, what should you be looking out for/doing?
Do not be distracted - Stop train if you are.
If Driver observes Train ahead where there are parallel lines, Stop and ascertain whether train is on parallel line or same line
If Driver observes train ahead on same line, wait until it moves
After the Train has moved you may follow at a safe distance (unless authorised to move closer in the event of a train rescue)
If after entering Section Driver notices track is obstructed or track damaged, bring train to stand immediately and report to TC
If next Signal is an Automatic Signal at STOP Driver may need to perform procedure again.

What is Shunting Outside of Station Limit?
or
Shunting Outside a Home Signal?
When train has to be shunted outside of controlled signals / outside of a Station Limit … the TC will contact any train that may enter into that area (because they might use R1 S3 to go passed an Automatic Signal) to make sure they do not move their train and they give enough space for you to shunt.
How is Shunting Outside of Station Limit authorised?
TC verbally authorises Driver they may proceed with the wrong line move
