Q

Evaluation of explanations of conformity Ao3 asch gender bias

A

However, research to support NSI as an explanation For conformity conducted by Ash is gender bias as only males were tested. It was an androcentric sample. Therefore it is difficult to generalise findings into females as it is suggested that females might be more conformist because they are more concerned about social relationships, and more concerned by being like by their peers than males.Neto 1995. Therefore this shows the NSI explains informative for some people females more than it does for others males this weakens and the external validity of research into NSI as an explanation as to why people conform.

A

In addition, Ash found that when participants wrote the answers down, conformity dropped 12.5%, this is because given answers privately meant there was no normative group pressure supporting the NSI due to a desire to be light to avoid ridicule

Q

Variables affecting conformity evaluation ao3 rts

A

Research to support was conducted by Lucas. He asked students to solve easy and hard maths problems. Participants were given three or the answers from students not actually real. The participants can find more often agreed with the wrong answers when the problems were more difficult rather than easy, therefore supported ashes research into variables affecting conformity, because it suggests that when the task is harder conformity increases

Q

Variables affecting conformity ao3 Lucas et al counter

A

However, Lucas et Al study found that conformity is more complex than asch suggested participants with high confidence in their math abilities conformed less on the hard maths problems than those with low confidence. This shows that an individual level level factor can influence conformity and interact with social variables, such as task, difficulty, limiting ashes, research into variables affecting conformity as he did not research the roles of individual factors.

Q

Variables affecting conformity gender bias

A

Ashes research into variables affecting pharmacy can be criticised as a gender bias as only males were tested. It was an androcentric example, therefore is difficult to generalise the findings to females as it is suggested that females might be more conformist regardless of the variable effecting and conformity because they are more concerned about social relationships and more concerned by being liked by their peers Nito 1955 therefore this shows there are some factors which determine somebody’s level and level of conformity more than the variables suggested such a gender weakens, the external validity of research into variables effecting and conformity

Q

Zimbardo and conformity to social roles ao3 extraneous variables

A

One strength of Zimbardo research into conformity is to social roles that it has high control over extraneous variables. One example is the way in which the participants were selected research assessed the emotional stability of the participants prior to the experiment and randomly signed them to the role of prisoner and Guard if prisoners behaviour very differently and they were those roles by chance, their behaviour must’ve been used to the role itself. This allows them to accurately measure the power of social roles on the level of conformity rather than being affected by individual personality differences. Therefore this increases the internal validity of Zimbardos research, investigating conformity to social roles.

Q

Zimbardo and conformity to social roles ao3 ethical issues

A

A further weakness of Zimbardo‘s research is that there was major ethical issues. There was a lack of informed consent as the prisoners did not consents to being arrested out their homes, and we’re only told they were taking part in an experiment, investigating prison life. Finally, the prisoners were not protected from harm as some showed signs of psychological disturbance, therefore somebody may argue this reduces the credibility of Zimbardo research investigating conformity to social roles

Discussion: however, Zimbardo carried out extensive debriefing sessions with the participants for several years afterwards and concluded that there were no long lasting negative effects. In addition, the benefits to our understanding of social roles on human behaviour outweighs the minor cost of ethical issues on participants as the research has been used to improve training for armed forces and present environments .

Q

Situational variables affect obedience, Bickman

A

Research to support situational variables affect obedience was a field experiment conducted by Bittman in New York. He had confederate dress in three different outfits as security guard, a milkman and a businessman and as passes by to give money to pay for parking or pick up litter it was found that participants were twice as likely to follow the instructions of a confederate, wearing a security guard uniform, and a businessman, therefore, supporting the power of uniform as a variable affecting obedience, and participants were more likely to follow these orders, as well as Demonstrating This variable affect obedience

Q

Situational variables affecting obedience Dispositional factors

A

An alternative explanation for obedience is dispositional factors internal factors e.g. the author authoritarian personality. This would argue that obedience is due to internal characteristics of the person e.g. their personality rather than situational factors. Therefore this suggests that obedience may not just be due to proximity location at uniform external factors. This weekend, the research in situational variables of obedience as this is not the whole explanation.

Q

Situational variables affecting obedience gender bias

A

Milligrams research in situational variables affect obedience has gender bias as a male only samples used. This may mean it is difficult to generalise the findings to females as they may have a obey differently to the variables effects. No obedience. For example, some research suggest females may be more obedient, regardless of the situational variable because their traditional gender roles made dictate they may be more submissive, for example shared, and King found that when ordered to give electric shocks to a puppy, females obeyed 100% at the time compared to 54% of male participants, this weekend, external validity of research into situational variables, fat obedience as variables may affect obedience and some people more than others.

Q

Explanations of obedience to authority, agenic state, RTS

A

Research to support the agent state an explanation of obedience to authority was shown in milligrams, obedience studies, most of milligrams participants Resisted given shocks at some point, and often ask the experimental questions such as who is responsible. If the learner is harmed when the experimental responded, I am responsible. The participants often continued to obey and give the electric shocks. This supports the state as an explanation for obedience, and once participants no longer believed that they were responsible for their actions, they obeyed the experimenter

Explanations of obedience to authority, Hoffing

A

Further research to support the explanations for obedience to authority was conducted by Hoffing. He conducted study using nurses on a hospital ward who will order by an unknown doctor to give a dangerous dose of a drug to patients via a telephone 21 out of 22 Nurses agreed to give the medication, even though they knew not to take order over the phone they will start beforehandtherefore supported legitimate of authority as an explanation for obedience because the doctor had more Ortie than the nurses more over. It could also support the agent state as the nurses may have felt the doctors were ultimately responsible as the authority figure, and this is why they obeyed.

Q

Explanations of obedience to authority, RTC, Mandel, 98

A

However, there is also research contradict the agenic state as the explanation for obedience to authority. Mandel 1998, described one incident involving German Nazi soldiers where men obey their orders to shoot civilians in a small town in Poland. However, they were told beforehand that they could be given other duties. Instead, this contradict the agent states of an explanation of obedience as the soldiers chose to shoot the civilians over there, all the duties, meaning they would not be able to place the blame on an authority figuredue to these findings, it could be argued that there are alternative explanations for obedience. For example, dispositional factors, internal factors, the authoritarian personality. This would argue with obedience is due to internal characteristics of the person e.g. their personality for example, have an extreme respect for authority. Choose their upbringing, therefore suggest that obedience might may not be due to legitimacy of authority and the agent state this week and explanations of obedience as they are not the sole explanations

Q

Dispositional explanation for obedience to authority, millgram elms

A

Research to support the authoritarian personality was conducted by Milgram and elms who interviewed participants who were taken part in milligrams experiment, and asked them to compete the F scale questionnaire to measure their levels or authoritarianism. They found higher levels of authoritarianism among those participants classified as obedient who gave electric shocks to 450 V compared to those classified as defiant, who only went to 300 V, therefore suggesting that the authoritarian personality is associated with obedience supporting the dispositional explanation of the authoritarian personality as an explanation for obedience

However, they obedient participants in milligrams research had a number of characteristics. Not typical in someone who has an authority personality. For example milligrams obedient participants did not experience a high-level of punishment in childhood. This suggest that the link between obedience and authoritarian personality is complex and may not be useful predictor of obedience .

Q

Disposition explanation for obedience to authority,Adorno

A

To evaluate the research conducted by a top. I don’t know a towel into the authoritarian personality can be criticised for social desirability as participants may have exaggerated their fascist views on the F scale questionnaire to present ourselves in the best way possible as they can please do the questionnaire just after the second world war in 1950 they may want to maximise any fascist fuse to look more obedient. Therefore I don’t know Might not be measuring what is it out to measure this reduces the internal validity of research into the authoritarian personality as an explanation of obedience

Q

Social support, RTS Albrecht

A

Research to support social support as an explanation to resistance. Social influence comes from Albert, who evaluated eight week programs to help pregnant adolescence resist pressure to smoke. Social sport was provided by a slightly older mentor buddy. It was found those who had a buddy with significantly less slightly to smoke those without body. Therefore they support social support as a valid explanation of resistance is social influence as the body acted as an ally, which gave the pregnant and adolescence the confidence to resist the pressure to smoke as it explanation suggests therefore, social support is a useful explanation of resistant social influence, as it can be used as part of intervention in the real world

18
Q

Social support discussion, Albrecht

A

However, critics may argue or the factors may affect the likelihood of resistant social influence through social support, such as the credibility of the ally. If the model is not seen as credible, the individual not identify with them, and therefore will be less likely to join the resistance social influence for example, when the descent in Ashes variations clearly had poor eyesight, the resistance levels dropped significantly. This suggest that social support is a more complex explanation of resistance than first thought, and therefore, is the validity of the explanation.

19
Q

Social support RTS milligram

A

Research to support resisting the predatory obey comes from milligram in one of variations. In milligrams study. The real participant was paid for two addition additional confederates who also paid the role teachers two additional confederate refused to go on and with due from the experiment early in this variation the participants who proceeded to go onto 450 V dropped to 10% from 65% in the original therefore this support social support as explanation for resistance to obedience because it shows that if every participant has support, they are more likely to resist obedience to the authoritative figure

20
Q

Locus of control rts

A

Research your spot logs of control was conducted by milligram and elms. The interview milligrams original participants and found those who had an internal log of control with significantly more likely reviews to continue giving shocks. Where is those are the external log of control molar to be within the 65% that gave the full 450 V, therefore supporting the existence of log of control as an explanation for resistance social info, because those were an internal log of control were more likely to resist obedience and remained independent in their behaviour.

21
Q

Locus of control, RTC

A

However, this research finding has not been consistent through time as research, contradict, bugs, or control as an explanation of resistance. Social influence comes from who analyse data from studies investigating log of control over 40 year period the data showed that over this time people became more resistance, social influence, but also more external. Therefore, if resistance was linked to locus of control, we would expect people to come more internal setting. The log of control is not valid explanation to resistance of social influence.

22
Q

Minority influence, RTS consistency

A

Research to support consistency from a minority influence was conducted by, Moscovici et al two confederates with a majority group of six participants. They were shown blue slides that differed in intensity and had to state the colour when the minority consistently called the blue sides slides green participants, give the same wrong answer at the time, however, when the minority group Inconsistently called the blue slides green agreement was one percent however when they consistently called the blue slides, green agreement rose 8% is, therefore the notion that consistencies is important when a minority is influencing majority

23
Q

Minority influence moscovici criticism

A

Research by Moskov Vicci to support the role of consistency minority influence last Monday realism as it used to realistic task of state in the colour slide therefore is difficult to generalise the findings to explain how minorities attempt to change the behaviour of majorities and realise social situations where the outcomes are more important, for example of minority may be less influential in a jury setting when deciding upon a verdict for a serious crime, which could be potentially life threateningdust in the externality of research into minority influence

24
Q

Social change, evaluation, real life, example

A

There is real life and evidence to support the role of minority influence in social influence processes in the social change and suffragette movement minority group of women show consistency, if I have the same belief that women should have equal rights between all members over a long period of time they showed education by going on hunger strike on a flexible as excepted women have to vote at age 30 while men got 21 and then continued to campaign. The majority penalised the idea that women should have equal rights and now society, attitudes, behaviours and laws of change, the demonstrates in the role of social influence processes in social change in the real world

DISCUSSION, HOWEVER, CRITICS ARGUE THAT SOCIAL CHANGE THROUGH MINORITY INFLUENCE, MAYBE LIMITED AS THEY CAN BE SEEN AS DEVIANT IN THE EYES OF THE MAJORITY. THEREFORE, THE MAJORITY MAJORITY MAY NOT WANT TO CHANGE THEIR VIEWS TO BE IN LINE WITH THEM AS THEY MIGHT BE SEEN AT DEVIANT THEMSELVES Moreover, the message from the minority, maybe forgotten while people focus on the deviant behaviour, instead that limiting minority influence social influence process in social change, and perhaps the reason why the suffragette movement took significant time to successfully implement social change.

25
Q

Social change alternative explanation

A

An alternative explanation for how minority group can cause. Social change is through normative social influence. This is where my native groups can provide information about what other people are doing so just telling young people that most people do not smoke so they can deter behaviours of smoking. This means its social changes encouraged by drawing attention to what the majority are doing and how individuals can be seen as more desirable rather than through minority influence post such as consistency, commitment and flex. Therefore there could be so several social influence processes That contribute social change
Discussion – however, Foxcroft conducted the matter. Analysis of 70 studies were social change with attempted through social norms and normative social influence, including reducing alcohol consumption and students. It was found often the use of normative social influence to bring about social change. That’s only a small amount amount of reduction in drinking quantity and had no impact on drinking frequency therefore infants does not produce long-term social change and therefore limits this issues of this social influence process to bring about change
