Shoulder Muscles Flashcards
Deltoid innervation
Axillary nerve
Deltoid actions
Anterior fibres – flexion and medial rotation.
Posterior fibres – extension and lateral rotation.
Middle fibres – the major abductor of the arm (takes over from the supraspinatus, which abducts the first 15 degrees).
Teres Major innervation
Lower subscapular nerve.
Teres Major actions
Adducts and extends at the shoulder, and medially rotates the arm.
What are the rotator cuff muscles?
Supraspinatus
Infraspinatus
Teres Minor
Subscapularis
SITS muscles
Innervation of Supraspinatus
Suprascapular nerve.
Innervation of infraspinatus
Suprascapular nerve.
Function of supraspinatus
Abducts the arm 0-15 degrees, and assists deltoid for 15-90 degrees
Function of infraspinatus
Laterally rotates the arm
Innervation of subscapularis
Upper and lower subscapular nerves.
Function of subscapularis
Medially rotates the arm.
Innervation of Teres Minor
Axillary Nerve
Function of Teres Minor
Laterally rotates the arm
