Shoulder and brachial plexus Flashcards
what is the nerve supply to the deltoid?
Axillary nerve
Identify the muscles that make up the anterior compartment of the axilla
Pectoralis major
Pectoralis minor
Subclavius muscles
Identify the muscles that make up the posterior compartment of the axilla
subscapularis
Teres major
Latissimus dorsi
Name the nerve supply of Serratus Anterior. Describe the location of this nerve in the brachial plexus
Long thoracic nerve
From C5-C7 roots
Where is the sternoclavicular joint found ? what are its anatomical relations?
At the medial end of the clavicle.
Common carotid on left
Braciocephalic on right
Internal jugular veins
Name the anatomical relations of the clavicle
Brachial plexus trunks and 3rd part of the subclavian vessels
What ligaments are attached to the coracoid and what are they functions?
Coraco-acromial - Forms an arch with the acromion under which supraspinatus muscle passes
Coraco-clavicular - Short but strong ligaments which anchor the scapula to the clavicle.
Coraco-humeral - separates Supraspinatus from Subscapularis
List the movements that take place at the gleno-humeral joint
Flexion/extension Abduction/adduction Internal/external rotation Protraction/retraction Circumduction
Name the sensory and motor innervation of the axillary nerve.
Sensory component is delivered by the posterior terminal branch
Motor function: innervates deltoid and teres minor
What is the surface landmark for the Axillary Nerve?
5cms distal to edge of acromian
What is the surface landmark for the 3 trunks?
Emerge from behind the anterior scalene and in front of the posterior scalene.
What is the surface landmark for the 6 divisions?
Behind the clavicle
What is the surface landmark of the Cords?
They lie medial to the coracoid process.
Name and describe the function of the Rotator Cuff muscles
Supraspinatus: abduction
Infraspinatus: external rotation
Teres minor: external rotation
Subscapularis: internal rotation
Draw and label the brachial plexus
Nerve roots: C5, 6, 7, 8, T1 Trunks: superior, middle, inferior Divisions: 3X ANTERIOR, 3x posterior Cords: lateral, posterior, medial Nerves: MARMU (musculocutaneous, axially, radial, median, ulnar)
