What is an ELS
a view of an exterior location. Can be used to easily establish a genre, setting or time.
Master shot
Also confirms location and time but can also begin to capture spacial relation. Captures practically everything within a scene
Wide shot
Typically positions characters far from the camera. Helps to show relationships between characters and environments. Focus is 50/50 between setting and subject
Full shot
Captures a head to toe of a character who is typically centre shot
Medium full shot
Head to waist of a character. Also known as a “cowboy “ shot
Medium shot
• mimics the typical view of the human eye, very neutral
• captures much character interaction, most standard shot
Medium close up
• Emphasis is on the character and the emotions they are displaying
• Usually from chest to the head
Close up
• Necessary to show dramatic moments of high emotions.
• Arranged at eye level with the character. This allows the windows to the soul to be examined by the viewer
EXTREME close up
• Used for extreme emotion
• key moments of a film, ones that may be vital to the plot can be shown in this way
