A

• When a scene begins or ends with a slow transition in or out of a block colour
• When used to end a scene it can give a sense of finality
•Fades to white have different connotations as opposed to fades to black

The dissolve

A

• This is the blending of two different shots
• It can be used to show memories, dreams or long periods of time passing
•Can create a hybrid scene, the end of one and the start of another

• It can match elements from the previous scene to similar ones in the next scene
• It’s an instantaneous cut and can be used to show a place or person at two points in time
