Static shot
The camera is locked to a tripod so there is 0 movement
• creates painterly compositions and allows an actors performance to shine
Pan
This is where a camera moves right to left yet stays fixed
• can be used for reveals
• Different speeds of pan can affect scene intensity
• “Whip “ pans can be used to grow energy and intensity
A tilt
• moves the camera up or down HORIZONTALLY
• can be used to show power or vulnerability
• can also be used to show setting, genre and scale
Push in
• This is when the camera is pushed in onto a subject
• Can elevate tension and show when something important is about to be said/done
Pull out
• This movement deemphasises a subject/object
•scene context and setting can be unveiled in this manner
• May be used to show helplessness or abandonment
Zoom
• Can unveil context in the same way as a pull out yet looks more unnatural to the human eye
• Can go in or out of a scene
•”Crash” zooms are used for comedic purposes
A dolly zoom
• This is when a camera is zoomed in out or in WHILST it’s physically moved in or out on a “Dolly”
• Can help emphasise a subject whilst still being immersive
Tracking
•A camera can be stabilised on a dolly or handheld.
•This is when a camera follows a subject, tracking shots are an effective way of slowly building tension as a character makes their way towards something negative
Arc shot
•The arc shot can be horizontal or vertical
• This is when a camera moves around something still in the frame
• Settings can be clearly examined this way
