definition of a long journey
A journey that exceeds 8 hours starting from when the first animal of the consignment is moved
when must you have a journey log
- transporters and organisers
- for long journeys between member states and within third countries for:
- Domestic equidae and other registered equidae
- Domestic animals of bovine, ovine, caprine, and porcine species
transport times/ rules for farm animals
- shall not exceed 8 hrs, can be extended is additional requirements are met
- Un-weaned calves, piglets, lambs, kids, and foals
- after 9 hrs of travel, rest period of at least 1 hr
- To be given liquid
- If necessary feed
- after this rest period can be transported for a further 9 hrs
- Pigs:
- transported for a maximum of 24 hrs
- continuous access to water
- Domestic equidae:
- transported for a maximum of 24 hrs
- liquid and if necessary fed every 8 hrs
- all other species:
- After 14 hrs of travel, rest period of at least 1 hr, given liquid and if necessary, food
- After this rest period they can be transported for a further 14 hrs
stunning methods of farm animals
- must not be carried out unless it is possible to bleed the Animals immediately afterwards
- Authorised methods:
- captive bolt
- Percussion blow to the head
- Electronarcosis
- exposure to carbon dioxide
when is stunning not obligatory
- the obligation of stunning does not apply:
- Invertebrate animals, to poultry and rabbits slaughtered for home consumption
- In the cases where killing of the animals is necessary due to emergency slaughter
killing methods
- free bullet pistol or rifle
- electrocution
- exposure to carbondioxide
- other approved methods (decapitation, dislocation of the neck, vacuum chamber)
Surgical interventions
- surgical operations for the purpose of modifying the appearance of pet animal, or for other non-curative purposes, shall be prohibited and in particular:
- the docking of tails (HU: until 7 days in some breeds)
- cropping of ears
- devocalisation
- declawing and defanging
