When using radioactive dating scientists first determine the amount of a radioactive element in the rock then they compare that amount with the amount of the stable element into which the radioactive element decay

They can learn many different things starting off with the age of earth they can learn the age of earth by using radioactive dating to figure the age of rocks , they can also figure out ancient organisms that once lived on earth

An index fossil must be widely distributed and represent an organism that existed for a geologically short period of time they are useful because they tell the relative ages of rock layers in which they occur

Scientists used earth samples and moon rocks and tested them using radioactive dating to conclude that the earth is about 4.6 billion years old
