INHIBIT OVULATION
Act on hypothalamic pituitary ovarian axis to suppress synthesis and secretion of FSH and prevent the surge of LH
What are risks associated with combined hormonal contraception?
Venous thrombosis
Arterial thrombosis
Adverse effects on oestrogen sensitive cancers
Migraine with aura - increased risk of ischaemic stroke
What happens if a woman misses two pills?
Take the most recent missed pill
Take the remaining pills at the correct time
Use condoms or abstain until 7 pills have been taken consecutively
What are the cancer risks associated with CHC?
Breast cancer - contraindicated if personal history
Cervical cancer
What are the non-contraceptive benefits of CHC?
Protection against ovarian and endometrial cancers
Acne reduction
Withdrawal bleed usually lighter and less painful than period
What are side effects of CHC?
Unscheduled bleeding
Mood changed
Weight gain
When can CHC be started?
Up to and including day 5 of cycle
After day 5 if reasonable certain not pregnant and uses condoms/ abstains for 7 days

Thicken cervical mucus

Current breast cancer
