.Made of horn and grows down from the coronet.

.Is 25% water.

.Is prone to dying out and cracking

.Hoof wall is covered in a natural shiny varnish called periople. It is secreted from a narrow band around the coronet called the perioplic ring. It prevents the evaporation of moisture from within the horn to stop cracking.

.Sole - concave to the ground. The outer surface of the sole is shed constantly (crumbly white stuff).

.Bars - continuation of the wall and assist in weight bearing.

.Seat of corn - area between the wall and the bars.

.White line - a band of soft horn that indicates the union between the wall and the sole.

.Frog - triangular mass of flexible horn. Has three lines going down the middle which are the frog clefts. Clean or trush can happen. Is an anti slip device & aids circulation.

Lameness?

.Causes - wedged stones, bruising, puncture wound, laminitis, cuts.

.Signs - heat in the hooves, not putting weight on the foot.

.Diagnosis - walk & trot the horse on even ground, x-rays.

Other causes of lameness - broken knee (grazed or deep puncture wound), tendon injury. Bandage both legs for support when one needs bandaging.

.Signs - foul smelling black discharge from the clefts of frog.

.Causes - dirt & wet bedding.

.Treatment - pick out hooves & clean clefts with antiseptic solution, when dry, spray clefts with antiseptic spray i.e gentian violet & pack with Stockholm tar by warming the bar first.

. Treatment - seek advice from vet & farrier.

.Affects either front feet & causes permanent lameness.

.Signs - pain, warm hoof wall.

.Causes - interference in the blood supply of the navicular bone, so enough blood is not reaching it causing it to die & be painful.

.Treatment - call vet
