Q

Give five examples of accidents that can occur with horses and describe the steps that can be taken to prevent them?

A

Give five examples of accidents that can occur with horses and describe the steps that can be taken to prevent them?

1) Horse kicking other horses while riding. Steps to prevent this are making sure you keep a safe distance away from other horses and look out for horses with a red ribbon on their tail.
2) Horse’s foot falling through the trailer. Steps to prevent this are making sure you check the trailer is not broken, rusted or rotten before you travel.
3) Horse getting foot caught in haynets. Steps to prevent this are buying a hay feeder in a stable or hang the haynet high enough that the horse will not get its leg stuck.
4) Horse getting stuck in rabbit holes. Steps to prevent this are checking the field for holes daily and filling them in if found.
5) A horse getting stuck in electrical fencing while electric is off. Make sure the electric for the fencing is always on or the horses will notice and may try to escape and get stuck in the fencing .

Q

Describe the correct method of lifting a feed sack and water bucket?

A

Describe the correct method of lifting a feed sack and water bucket?

1) lifting a heavy feed sack first you would check the weight of the feed sack printed on the outside and if you can lift by yourself you would stand close to it and keep your spine straight and then bend your knees and grab hold of the sack with both hands and then lift by straightening your knees and then place in a wheel barrow. If heavier than you can manage, ask for help and use a wheelbarrow to convey it.

2) carrying a heavy bucket of water you would
share the water out between 2 buckets to level out the load. The water can then be returned to the single bucket when you get to the stable. To carry the buckets you would take one at a time and start by standing close to the bucket with your spine straight and then bend down with your knees and grab hold of the handles and then lift by straightening your knees, carry slowly and put down by bending your knees .

List five safety rules to be followed at all times when riding on the road. Explain why each rule given is important?

A

List five safety rules to be followed at all times when riding on the road. Explain why each rule given is important?

1) Ride on the left hand side of the road not on the right or in the middle because in the uk cars drive on the left hand side of the road so it is important you do too or accidents will occur.
2) Always obey the traffic lights because if you go through a red one you could walk into incoming traffic and the drivers would be going fast as they would not expect to see a horse in the road and may not have enough time to stop so, could hit you injuring yourself, the horse, the driver and passengers of the vehicle.
3) Someone in the group should always be aware of the traffic in front and to the rear of the group because this person can let drivers know when it is safe to pass and if they don’t tell the drivers they could get impatient and pass when it is not safe and scare the horses or cause an accident.
4) Always give hand signals when turning because if you don’t the other road users will not know where you are going and could possibly go into you, scare the horse or make the vehicle crash into in to something as they try to move out of the way.
5) Do not go on a public footpath or cycle track unless it is an emergency because people and cyclists use these paths and your horse could scare the people using the path or a cyclist going fast could hit you .

Discuss fire prevention measures that should be practised in all stable yards?

A

Discuss fire prevention measures that should be practised in all stable yards?

.The fire measures that should be practiced in all stable yards are training everyone at the yard to know what to do in the event of a fire and the importance of fire safety. Have an area where smokers can smoke away from the stables and put up signs that clearly say where you cannot and can smoke on the yard.

.Have all electrical wires and the trip switches checked regularly for any signs of wear and use a residual current device for appliances and have them check regularly. Avoid using heaters in stables as they are a big fire hazard but if you have to use one then make sure it is monitored all the time while in use and is stored away safely.

.Have everyone stack hay loosely to give room for air to circulate. Clean regularly to remove dust and cobwebs away from lightbulbs and don’t store flammable items in the stables. Make sure there is equipment in the event of a fire like sand buckets, fire extinguishers for different types of fires and are checked annually & staff are trained in their correct use. Hoses that can attach to the taps are long enough to reach all areas and are not split.

.If you have a kitchen at the yard then buy fire blankets and make sure staff know when and how to use them. Install a fire point with a display next to it giving important information in the event of a fire. Do occasional fire drills so everyone can freshen up on their fire training skills e.g. where to turn the horses out if a fire and to keep the muck heap away from the yard as when it heats up it can ignite.

Describe what you would do upon discovering a fire in a stable yard?

A

Describe what you would do upon discovering a fire in a stable yard?

.I would sound the alarm to warn others at the yard so they can make themselves safe and help you. Ring the fire brigade on my mobile while removing the horses from their stables starting with the ones closest to the fire and lead them to a safe field and then attempt to put out the fire if it is safe to do so.

.Fire extinguishers are loud, so ensure you have someone with you to alert you to changes in the fire around and behind you which could risk your safety.

A

You are out hacking in a small group when the horses start to misbehave, causing one rider to fall. She appears unable to move and complains of pain in the middle of her back. Describe how you will deal with the situation?

.I would deal with this situation by first checking if there are any medically qualified or trained first aiders in the group who can take charge of the casualty. If not, I would deal with it. I would be looking around for anything that could harm me or the group and if it’s safe I would then dismount and go to the fallen rider and tell her not to move and ask if she can move her fingers and toes and look for any wounds without moving her. I would ask most of the group to take her horse back but leave one rider to hold my horse while I call for an ambulance and stay with her.

.If the horse is loose & cannot be caught, call the police to alert them to the hazard this poses to the public. Also I would get someone in the group call the yard as the horse is likely to run home.

.When I get through to the ambulance service I would explain to them what has happened and that she seems unable to move and has pain in the middle of her back and I would tell them the location of where we are .

.If she stops breathing – chest compressions will be required to sustain life – even if this means you have to move her. Life takes priority over potential paralysis. Update the emergency services that she has stopped breathing which will raise their response priority.

.If not if breathing normally I would then cover the casualty with something to keep them warm and follow the paramedics advise and reassure to her that help is coming. I would then call the parents or whoever the rider wants to know what has happened so they can go with her to the hospital. I would call the stables to let them know what has happened.

.When the paramedics arrive I would let them know how the casualty is doing and let them take over. I would then take the horses back with the person that stayed with me. Once I am back at the yard I would tell the yard manager the details of the fall so they can record it in the accident book and the group can sign and date the witness statements.
