shibbidy Bop Flashcards
What are the 4 Hypoglycaemics?
Biguanides, Sulfonylureas, Thiazolidinediones, Acrabose
Types of insulin (name 5)
Ultra-rapid acting – Lispro (Humalog), Aspart (NovoLog). Short duration/slower acting – Natural insulin. Intermediate duration – Humulin Neutral Protamine – Hagerdorn (NPH), Lente insulin (Insuvet). Long duration – Ultralente, Glargine. Premixed biphasic insulin – Neutral:isophane. Long acting – Lantus
What’s special about omeprazole?
only PPI available for parenteral delivery
What is Nystatins mechanism of action?
binds to ergosterol, a major component of the fungal cell membrane. When present in sufficient concentrations, it forms pores in the membrane that lead to K+ leakage, acidification, and death of the fungus.
Colchicine mechanism of action
inhibits microtubule polymerization by binding to tubulin, one of the main constituents of microtubules. Availability of tubulin is essential to mitosis, and therefore colchicine effectively functions as a “mitotic poison” or spindle poison.
Colchicine s/e
Nausea, Vomiting, Diarreha, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, peripheral neuropathy, high doses: bone marrow damage, anaemia, hair loss.
Mechanism of action for Allopurinol
purine analog; it is a structural isomer of hypoxanthine and is an inhibitor of the enzyme xanthine oxidase (which does stuff leading to uric acid production)
what is Stevens-Johnsons syndrome?
life threatening skin condition where cell death causes the epidermis to separate from the dermis.
what does Mylanta contain?
Aluminium hydroxide – 200 mg Magnesium Hydroxide – 200 mg Simethicone – 20 mg (per 5 ml)
why are magnesium and aluminium used together?
to combat magnesiums laxative and aluminiums constipation affect
What is Glucagon?
Polypeptide hormone produced by alpha cells in the pancreatic islets.
What does Glucagon do?
Increase plasma levels of glucose by breakdown of glycogen (activates hepatic glucose production)
Define Glycogenolysis?
Breakdown of glycogen in the liver to recycle glucose
Define Glycogenesis
Conversion of glucose to glycogen for storage in the liver
What is Glycogen?
Storage form of glucose
