Scat man Flashcards
VTE
Venous Thromboembolism - umbrella term for DVT and PE
What is a DVT how is formed?
DVT is when a clot forms in a deep vien. A blood clot can form if vien is damaged, or if blood flow is slow or if blood has an increased tendency to clot.
what are the 3 main components of blood?
Erythrocytes (RBC), Leukocytes (WBC), thrombocytes (Platelets)
what is Haematocrit, how much for each gender?
The percentage of RBC in the blood - 38-46% for women, 40-54% for men
What’s Polycythemia
To many RBC’s
What’s anaemia?
a condition in which there is a deficiency of red cells or of haemoglobin in the blood
Risk factors for Leukaemia
cigarette smoking, exposure to certain chemicals (such as benzene, exposure to large doses of ionizing radiation or drugs that depress the bone marrow
2 classification by cell origin for Leukaemia
Lymphocytic Leukaemia -Cancer in bone marrow that makes lymphocytes
Myelogenous Leukaemia - cancer in other marrow cells
What is Leukaemia
A group of malignant disorders affecting the blood and blood forming tissues of the bone marrow, lymph system and spleen
Diagnosis for acute leukaemia
Staging; lumbar puncture (especially children & ALL)
CT scans
Haemophilia A
is a genetic deficiency in clotting factor VIII,[1] which causes increased bleeding and usually affects males. About 70% of the time it is inherited as an X-linked recessive trait, but around 30% of cases arise from spontaneous mutations.
Haemophilia B
is a blood clotting disorder caused by a mutation of the factor IX gene, leading to a deficiency of factor IX. It is the second-most common form of haemophilia, rarer than haemophilia A. It is sometimes called Christmas disease
What are clotting factors?
proteins in the blood that control bleeding
What is a thrombus?
the formation of ablood clot inside a blood vessel
What is Multiple Myeloma?
Abnormal plasma cells made in the bone marrow
