Shell Flashcards
Why are you interested working in working at Shell?
I am interested in joining shell because it gives me the opportunity to work and contribute on exciting projects that works towards a cause that I am passionate about- helping the world transition to net zero emmisons. I have read about Shell’s Renewables and Energy Solutions business, comprised of teams and professionals focused on providing cleaner energy solutions, helps bring Shell closer towards its target of being a net-zero emissions business by 2050. As someone who wants to work in renewable energy projects, I feel like Shell is a perfect fit for me as a place to work and grow.
Furthermore, I am interested in joining shell because of the huge potential for growth that the graduate scheme offers. Your graduate scheme offers a unique tailored development plan and a rotational scheme where I will have a development journey that’s tailored to my strengths and needs. I am excited to be a part of shells “learner mindset” environment which is a supportive, high performance environment based on opnness, curiosity and growth and unlock my potential.
Finally, I am interested in joining shell as I feel that the companies values Allign with mine. When Attending bright networks employer festival I had the chance to speak with shell employees and learn about the culture of the company and the values of honesty, Integrity and Respect, which resonated with me as those are values that I keep myself.
Tell me about a time when you changed someone’s opinion
Situation:
During my final year group project which involved filtering, Labelling and manipulating ECG data, our team was deciding whether to use an averaging filter for the ECG data for the manipulation task to amend abnormally large spikes.
Task:
I believed that to best achieve our goal, a combination of the averaging filter and the use of a unique algorithm would best achieve this however, this would require us making a unique innovative code from functions within MATLAB.
Action:
I saw a way to solve this problem and implement the code so I researched what functions where best to use and then at our next session presented a plan at how we could implement this code as a team and how the results could elevate the code and amend the spikes much better than the original plan.
Result:
Initially there was resistance from my team as the project was ambitious and looked complex but after I showed them the plan for implementing this they were persuaded and we adopted the new approach, which worked really well and as a group we achieved a first class mark for that project.
Tell me about a time when you had to learn something fast:
Situation:
In July 2023, my uncle who owns a building services company asked me if I knew anyone capable of creating a website for him and his company. I saw this as an opportunity to expand my skills and contribute so I volunteered, even though I had zero experience in that at the time.
Task:
The main objective was to create a comprehensive and professional looking website within a few weeks, with a multiple s`ections and pages, I knew this was important for him so I had to quickly equip myself with the necessary web development skills to deliver a product that would meet his expectations.
Action:
To complete this I had to fast track my learning journey committing myself to long hours of learning and implementing what I learnt immediately. I watched lots of tutorials on how to use wordpress to accelerate my learning and continually seeked feeback from my uncle to ensure that the website was shaking up to what I envisioned.
Result:
Eventually after hours of hard work the website was completed within the timeframe given, containing features such as an about us section, a gallery, testimonials and contact information. This experienced demonstrated and developed my ability to learn quickly and adapt to new challenges.
Tell me about a time when you resolved a conflict
Situation:
While working in a group project at university 2 others in our group was having a minor conflict on how to write and structure our group report. Productivity was starting to decline due to this and the deadline was approaching.
Task:
I understand the value of teamwork and cohesion and felt that I had to step in and mediate the situation before it effected the quality of the group project.
Action:
I organised a meeting with the others to address the issue at hand. I allowed both to express their views without interruption so both parties felt heard and understood. Then we critically analysed both pros and cons of both methods and we ended up compromising on a solution that had the pros of each approach.
Result:
Through this, the spirit of the group was lifted and we ended up making a strong report together that had met all requirements and scored highly and we received great feeback from our proffesor. This experience highlighted the importance of effective conflict resolution skills and the value of collabortive efforts.
Tell me a time where you had big workload/meet deadlines
How do you deal with pressure
When did you ask for help
Situation: During my individual project at Royal Holloway, University of London, I was working on EEG classification of left hand and right hand motor imagery. The aim was to build code that could filter and classify EEG data based on motor imagery.
Task: I needed to implement a technique called common spatial pattern to maximize the variance between the two classes of data. While I understood the theory, applying it practically using MATLAB proved to be challenging.
Action: I decided to approach my professor, an expert in the field, to gain insights and guidance. We spent a few hours discussing the algorithm’s intricacies and walked through the MATLAB implementation step by step. My professor provided me with valuable feedback on my approach and suggested some improvements.
Result: With the assistance I received, I was able to improve the efficiency of my code. The project’s average classification rate achieved was roughly 70%, and I learned the importance of seeking expertise when faced with complex challenges. This experience also reinforced the value of thorough preparation and understanding before diving into the practical application of theoretical concepts.
Tell me a time you asked for feeback
One time I received constructive feedback was when I was working on a group project in college. Our professor gave us feedback on our presentation, saying that our visuals were not clear and didn’t support our points well. I took this feedback to heart and worked with my group to create new visuals that were more impactful and easy to understand. As a result, our revised presentation received high praise from our professor and our peers. This experience taught me the importance of using visuals effectively in presentations and how to take feedback and use it to improve my work.”
