Describe the process of deindustrialisation in Sheffield
A
- in 1911, 182,000 manufacturing jobs which consisted of 43% of all employment
- during 1970’s market downturn caused seven steel works in Sheffield to close
- 1984 unemployment reached a high of 16% -> manufacturing accounted for 50% total in 1971 and now 24%
- by 1988, British steels local workforce had declined in number by 80%
- 1980-90 Sheffield lagged far behind

A
- Advanced manufacturing park (AMP) is a joint venture between university of Sheffield and 100+ industrial partners)
- ‘made in sheffied’ trademark
- accounts for 500 manufacturing jobs (700-800 people employed in total)

- provides business + productive space for high tech industries
- technology developed in AMP is applied in leading edge projects (F1 + military)
