The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14 0-6.9 = Acid 7 = Neutral 7.1-14 = Alkaline Hair and skin has a pH of 4.5-5.5

Acid solutions close the cuticle

What does shampoo contain?
The shampoo contains an ingredient known as a surfactant (detergent) or cleansing agent
The surfactant (detergent) molecule has two parts:
hydrophilic –> Head
hydrophobic –> Tail
What does Hydrophilic mean?
Head that attracts the water
What does Hydrophobic mean?
Tail that attracts oil
How shampoo works?
The surfactant (detergent) works as an emulsifier allowing the oil and water to mix. It also breaks down the surface tension of water, which helps remove the oil/dirt from the hair.
Shampooing products
There are many varieties of shampoo available. It is important to use the correct shampoo to get the best result for your individual clients.
Varieties may include:
- Normal hair
- Dry/damaged hair
- Acid balanced
- Oily hair and scalp
- Clarifying/pre-treatment
- Anti-dandruff
- Conditioning
- Colour shampoo
- Thinning hair
- Powder dry shampoo
What is Surface conditioners?
Surface Conditioners
Coat the hair shaft and restore moisture
Generally left on the hair for 1-2 minutes
Rinsed off
What is Volumising conditioners?
Volumising Conditioners Create volume in fine, limp hair; is a form of surface conditioner Generally left on the hair for 1-2 minutes Rinsed off
What is penetrating conditioners?
Contain moisturisers and may contain proteins; suitable for dry, brittle, mechanically or chemically damaged hair These conditioners help repair damage by working in the cortex and on the cuticle Follow manufacturer's instructions for the length of time to leave on the hair after shampooing Rinse well
Scalp treatments
These products are designed to treat: Oily scalps Sensitive scalps Dandruff-affected scalps Follow manufacturer’s instructions for use
What is pre-treatment conditioners?
Pre-Treatment Conditioners
These are products that can be used prior to a colour or perm service to even out the porosity of the hair
Also known as a porosity leveller
What is a post-treatment conditioners
Antioxidant Conditioners
These post-chemical treatments are used to:
Close the cuticle
Stop further chemical process
Return the hair to its natural pH
Generally left on the hair for 1-2 minutes and rinsed off
Infection control and safety
Divided into four areas:
Client care prior to the service:
Includes protecting the clients’ skin and clothing.
Client care during the service: Includes detangling
the hair from ends to roots prior to and after shampooing.
Personal care: Includes washing and sanitising
hands with liquid soap and drying thoroughly to avoid
contact dermatitis.
Salon care: Includes ensuring shampoo area is
clean and tidy throughout the service.
What is Effleurage(Eff-LUH-rahzh):
Light, gliding strokes made with the palms of the hands or the fingertips
Used to:
Relax the client
Distribute product (shampoo/conditioner)
What is a Rotary message?
Circular movement on the scalp; applied with the fingertips
Used while cleansing the hair
Stimulates nerves and increases blood circulation
What is Petrissage(PET-ri-sahzh):
Performed with thumbs and fingers; light or heavy kneading and rolling of the muscles
Performed with the palm of the hand pressing firmly over the muscles
Performed with the heel of the hand and fingers, grasping and squeezing
Generally performed from the front of the head to the back
Deeply stimulates muscles, nerves and skin glands
Promotes the circulation of blood
Used as part of a conditioning service
What to do in the consultation?
Discuss the client’s expectations and if they can be achieved Identify the hair type and condition Discuss previous services and their effects on the hair Consider the service to be provided Check the condition of the scalp Question your client about contra-indications
What is contra-indications?
A contra-indication is a reason that would prevent service or treatment from taking place
Contra-indications to the shampooing and conditioning service may include:
Infectious skin and scalp disorders
Cuts or abrasions on the scalp
Injuries to the treatment area or scar tissue
Allergies
