What are the signs/symptoms of chlamydia in a female?
Vaginal discharge. Dysuria (always consider chlamydia as a cause of sterile pyuria). Vague lower abdominal pain/tenderness Fever. Intermenstrual or postcoital bleeding. Deep dyspareunia. Cervical excitation Pharyngeal infection.
What are the symptoms of chlamydia in a male?
Urethritis with dysuria and urethral discharge
OR epididymo-orchitis (unilateral testicular pain ± swelling)
Pharyngeal infection.
What are the signs/symptoms of gonorrhoea in a male?
Discharge and/or dysuria
Epididymal tenderness/swelling or balanitis
Half of the cases are asymptomatic
What are the signs/symptoms of gonorrhoea in a female?
Half of the cases are asymptomatic, and examination is often normal
Increased or altered vaginal discharge
Lower abdominal pain
Intermenstrual bleeding or menorrhagia
Easily induced contact bleeding of the endocervix
How are chlamydia and gonorrhoea diagnosed
Nucleic acid amplification test (NAATs)
Give some potential complications of pelvic inflammatory disease
Female: ectopic pregnancy, tubal infertility, chronic pelvic pain, miscarriage
Male: proctitis, epididymitis, urethral scarring/stricture
