Why is sterilisation considered permanent?
Reversal success rate is low
Not offered by NHS
What is tubal occlusion?
Laparoscopy under general anaesthesia
Occlusion using Filshie clips
Can be done electively or during C-section
How does tubal occlusion work?
Prevents ovum from travelling down fallopian tubes
Why is contraception still needed until next menstrual period?
Ovum may have already reached uterus during that cycle
What is a vasectomy?
Cutting the vas deferens
Prevents sperm travelling from testes to ejaculate
How is a vasectomy performed?
Under local anaesthetic
Takes 15-20 minutes, less invasive than female sterilsation, better option for couples
How long is contraception needed for after a vasectomy?
Two months
Testing of semen is needed to confirm absence of sperm
Usually carried out after 12 weeks
