What is nappy rash?
Contact dermatitis in the nappy area
What causes nappy rash?
Friction between skin and nappy
Contact with urine and faeces in a dirty nappy
When do babies tend to get nappy rash?
9-12 months
What can nappy rash lead to?
Candida infection
Staphylococcus or streptococcus infection
What are the risk factors for nappy rash?
Delayed nappy changing
Irritant soap and vigorous cleaning
Poorly absorbent nappies
Diarrhoea
Oral antibiotics
How does nappy rash present?
Sore, red inflamed skin
Skin crease sparing
How do you identify a candidal infection in the nappy area?
Rash in skin folds
Large red macules
Well demarcated scaly border
Circular pattern
Satellite lesions
Oral thrush
How is nappy rash managed?
Highly absorbent nappies
Change nappy as soon as possible
Water or gentle alcohol free products
Ensure nappy area is dry
Maximise time not wearing a nappy
