Sexual + Asexual Reproduction Flashcards
Asexual reproduction
The ability to produce new offspring without having to find a mate.
Advantages of asexual reproduction - (3 eg)
Organisms can quickly colonise an area
Fast process
Requires little energy
Disadvantages of asexual reproduction - (3 eg)
- All offspring are identical to the parent
- If conditions change, the population lacks genetic variation
- Pressure on availabilty of resources
- Population more prone to diseases and deaths
External fertilisation
Animals release their gametes into the external environment. Fertilisation occurs outside the organism’s body.
Advantage of external fertilisation - (1 eg)
Large number of gametes produced, increase chance of fertilisation
Disadvantage of external fertilisation - (1 eg)
Limited to aquatic or watery environments
Internal fertilisation
Animals who deliever gametes directly into the reproductive tract. The fertilisation occurs in the body.
Advantage of internal fertilisation - (1 eg)
Increase chances of gametes meeting
Occurs in all terrestrial organisms and some aquatic animals
Advantages of sexual reproduction - (3 eg)
- Genetic diversity
- Variation increases survival chances
- Population more resilient to changes in environment
Disadvantages of sexual reproduction - (3 eg)
- Slow process
- Requires lots of energy
- 1 to few offpsring at a time
- Some organsims can be killed during the process, due to competition for mate
