Adaptations Flashcards
Limiting factors for tolerance
Environmental conditions that restrict the types of organisms that can survive in a given habitat.
Examples of Limiting factors
1. Floor of tropical rainforest
2. Desert
3. Polar region
- Light intensity
Low light intensity limits the kinds of plants that can survive - Water availiability
Limited water supply means that only plants able to tolerate drying out can survive - Temperature
Low temperatures limit the types of organisms that are found.
Adaptations - (definition)
A structural, behavioural or physiological feature that enhances the survival of an organism in particular environmental conditions
Structural - (definition)
Physical features that enable organisms to survive in their environment.
Behavioural - (definition)
Activities that an organism performs in response to internal and external stimuli
Physiological - (definition)
Internal and/or cellular features of an organism that enable them to survive in a given environment
