Genetic diversity Flashcards
Why is genetic diversity important? - (2 eg)
- It increases biodiversity in ecosystems
- Increases species survival following environmental change
- Increases the number of individuals that can survive and reproduce because they are more robust to change
What is biodiversity?
The variety of all living organisms
Genetic diversity
The variety of genes or the number of different inherited characteristics present in a species.
Species diversity
The number of different species/populations in a community, habitat or environment.
Ecosystem diversity
The variety of physical environments in which organisms live and interact.
How does genetic diversity happen?
DNA mutations
(Mutations create slightly different versions of the same genes. This makes every individual different.)
Point mutation
A single base is changed
Deletion
A base is removed and causes a frameshift
Insertion
A base is added and causes a frameshift
Inversion
Inverts a segment of DNA from end to end
