Distribution of populations Flashcards
Answer with definitions
Uniform distribution
A non random pattern where there is a high level of intraspecfic competition, so members of the population avoid each other.
Clumped distribution
A non random pattern where there is a high level of individuals living in the same location as one another.
Random distribution
A random pattern where the presence of one member has no effect on the location of other, or the environmental conditions are spread throughout the area.
4 Variables affecting population size
- Births
- Deaths
- Immigration (moving into population)
- Emmigration (moving out population)
Positive growth rates
When population size increases over a stated period
Negative growth rates
When the population size decreases over a stated period
Zero population growth
When growth by births and immigration match the losses by deaths and emigration over a stated period.
Open populations
Experience migration of individuals immigration or emmigration
Closed populations
Populations that don’t experience immigration or emmigration as they are isolated from other populations of the same species
3 examples of Secondary Ecological events
Removal of predators
Disease
Weather
Increased food supply
Density dependent
Events that change in their severity as the size of a population changes
Example of Density Dependent Factors
Contagious disease
Predators
Competition
Density Independent Factors
Events that impact and affect all individual regardless of their size
Example of Density Independent Factors
Frost, Ice, Bushfires
