Q

explain in terms of genes how bacteria asexually reproduce

A
  • when they reproduce, they replicate their genetic material and divide in half by mitosis
  • there is no mixing of genetic material
each organism contains identical genes which are genetically identical to parent

Q

why does sexual reproduction often result in variation

A

because the genes are taken from both parents and the offspring produced is not identical

Q

how does an offspring develop

A

the gametes are fused together during fertilisation. the fertilised egg then develops into an offspring

Q

compare asexual and sexual reproduction

A
  • in asexual reproduction only one parent is needed to reproduce, whereas in sexual reproduction, two parents are needed. This slows things down
  • in asexual reproduction, if the parent is well adapted to an area, the offspring will share the same characteristics
  • in sexual reproduction, variation in offsprings, lead to adaptation in species!! These organisms can continue to reproduce and continue
  • in asexual reprocessing, changes in abiotic or biotic factors may affect the whole species (such as disease)
