evidence of evolution Flashcards
1
Q
what are fossils
A
fossils are formed when animal or plant remains are formed and preserved in rocks
2
Q
how does a fossil form
A
- reptile dies falls to ground
- flesh rots, leaving skeleton being covered in clay or mud
- protected, over a million years, the skeleton mineralises and turns to rock
- the fossil emerges as the rocks move and erosion takes place
3
Q
what evidence supports that simple life forms evolved into complex ones?
A
fossils of simple organisms are found in older rocks. fossils of complex organisms are found in recent rocks
4
Q
what supports that animals require plants to live
A
plant fossils appear before animal fossils
5
Q
what is one downfall of a fossil record
A
there are gaps in it
6
Q
what is a fossil record
A
fossil layers show a sequence saying that organisms have changed over time.
7
Q
what is other evidence for evolution
A
- rapid changes in species
- extinction
8
Q
what do closely related species have similar
A
DNA and proteins
