natural selection Flashcards
what is evolution
gradual change in a species over time.
how do organisms evolve
through natural selection
complete sentence in a species there is…….
normally a wide genetic variation. when further mutations occur, the genetic variation increases.
what is meant by survival of the fittest
those organisms that are best adapted to their environment will survive and pass on those genes to their offsprings.
what is the process of natural selection
- organism shows a variation caused by difference in gene
- organism with the characteristics that are best adapted to environment survive and reproduce
- survival of the fittest (less adapted die)
- genes from organism are passed to offspring so that the offsprings possess the same characteristics
- this process is repeated many times over a period of time
is evolution a fast process
no it’s a slow process that occurs over many years
antibiotic resistance
if one bacterium gets a mutation that allows it to be resistant from antibiotics, it will survive while the rest will die out. Bacteria grow rapidly, so the bacterium will grow in number and soon the whole generation will be resistance to antibiotics.
