Sexology College 4: Context and Sexual Behavior Flashcards
good genes hypothesis
attractiveness, symmetry, etc. means that they can create good offspring
hedonistic hotspot in the brain
it’s rewarding to be in contact with and around attractive people
Richard von Kraft-Ebing (1886)
first person to talk about the phenomenon that incentive stimuli differ for everyone
- psychopathia sexualis: to warn about dangerous sexual interests (introduced new term bisexual, sadist, masochism)
- important learning lesson from this book: when it comes to unique sexual interests, the learning history is of huge importance (operant conditioning)
paraphilia: 2 definitions
1) an atypical experience or recurring/intense sexual arousal to objects. situations, fantasies, behaviors or individuals
2) a sexual interest in anything other than a consenting human partner
paraphilic disorders
disorder, because it either bothers them or others
1: exhibitionistic disorder
2: voyeuristic disorder
3: pedophilic disorder/hebephilia
4: coercive sexual sadism disorder
5: frotteuristic disorder
6: necrophilia
7: zoophilia/bestiality
involving solitary behavior or consenting others; still a disorder because people don’t actually want it but they have these feelings
8: sadomasochism
9: fetishistic transvetism
10: fetishism
1: exhibitionist disorder
people want to expose themselves to non-consenting others
2: voyeuristic disorder
watching non-consenting others (have sex)
4: coercive sexual sadism disorder
pain/humiliation to unwilling others
5: frotteuristic disorder
rubbing genitals on non-consenting others
- thoughts aren’t an issue, behavior is
the Dual Control Model of the Sexual Response (Janssen & Bancroft, 2023)
sexual response = sum of stimulating and inhibiting stimuli (SR = 3x (what you see) + 2x (what you expect) - 3x (guilt)2)
- there’s standard differences between individuals; some are more prone to excitatory stimuli, some more to inhibiting stimuli
alliesthesia = depends on moment and internal state
why inhibitory processes?
disadvantageous circumstances or developmental stages; social environment is anti; excessive sex reduces sperm count
first in life: disgust -> changes in puberty
Sexual Strategies Theory: evolution of different mating strategies
sex X temporal duration of mating
MALE X SHORT TERM:
- small partner number
- minimize cost and risk
- minimize commitment
- identify fertile women
FEMALE X SHORT TERM:
- identify good genes
- evaluation as long-term mate
- immediate resources
- mate insurance, back-up
MALE X LONG TERM:
- paternity probability
- reproductive value
- good parenting abilities
- commitment
FEMALE X LONG TERM:
- men able to invest
- physical protection
- good parenting abilities
- commitment
Parental Investment Theory: women invest more, because baby grows inside of them
sexual selection
intrasexual: competition between males
intersexual: females decide which male
Sexual Script Theory
1) individuals learn/internalize sexual behaviors, expectations and norms within a given cultural context
2) these scripts are guidelines for sexual behavior
Sexual Competence (Sommet & Berent, 2023)
women’s functioning improves when watching porn, men’s sex lives become worse
