sex linkage Flashcards
what is an autosome?
chromosomes (22 pairs out of 23) that do not determine the sex of an organism (Body genes)
what is the 1 pair of chromosomes in a male and female
female= XX (heterogametic sex)
male = XY (homogametic sex)
what does sex linkage mean
when genes are carried on the X or Y chromosomes
why does the X chromosome carry majority of the genes and what are 2 examples of diseases that are X-linked
-because X is larger in size than Y = males most affected due to lack of another X which would mask those X-linked genes
-hemophilia= X-linked recessive disorder, affects coding for a crucial blood clotting protein,
-colour blindness= recessive gene located on the X chromosome
