epistasis Flashcards
what is epistasis
-interaction of non-linked genes where one marks or blocks the expression of the other
-genes may be antagonistic or complimentary
what does epistasis cause
-reduces number of phenotypes in the F2 generation different unusual ratios
what are the names of the two genes interacting in epistasis
-epistatic gene = the gene masking the effect of another gene
-hypostatic gene = gene whose functionality of the expression is marked or prevented
what are the two types of epistasis and explain them
-dominant epistasis= when one or both dominant epistatic alleles are present, masking of the other gene occurs
-recessive epistasis= epistatic gene must be homozygous for it to mask the hypostatic gene
what is the dominant epistasis ratio
what is the recessive epistasis ratio
