Sex differences in metabolism Flashcards
1
Q
What are 3 physiological sex differences?
A
- Haemoglobin concentration
- Muscle mass
- Reproductive hormone levels
2
Q
What is the difference in fuel usage between men and women training at the same relative submaximal intensity?
A
In females, larger % of whole-body fuel use is derived from fat. This effect is likely related to circulating oestrogen levels.
3
Q
Do females have a higher proportion of Type I or Type II fibres than men?
A
Type I. They also have a greater reliance of IMTG during exercise which may be related to high IMTG concentrations in type I fibres.
4
Q
What does oestrogen supplementation do in males?
A
Decreases carb oxidation and increases fat oxidation during endurance exercise.
