Fat Metabolism During Exercise Flashcards
In basic terms, what conversion defines beta oxidation?
Conversion of fatty acyl-CoA to acetyl-CoA
What is ‘lipolysis’?
The break down of triglycerides in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue.
What are the 2 key lipases?
Adipose tissue triglycerides (ATGL) - predominantly breaks down triglycerides
Hormone sensitive lipase (HSL) - predominantly breaks down diglycerides
How is adipose tissue lipolysis mediated?
Via ATGL and HSL
What is an important activator of lipases?
Sympathetic nervous system circulating adrenaline acting through beta receptors.
What is a negative effect of beta blockers?
An inhibition of mobilization of FA during exercise, associated with muscle fatigue due to increase in glycogen use.
