Diabetes and measuring insulin resistance Flashcards
What is glycosuria?
Presence of sugar in the urine (due to high levels of insulin resistance).
What is hyperglycaemia?
Very high blood glucose levels
What is the difference between type I and type II diabetes?
Type I - individual doesn’t produce enough insulin
Type II - individual produces insulin, however insulin receptors do not work
What is euglycaemia?
Normal blood glucose levels
What is hyperinsulinaemia?
Zero hepatic glucose production.
Rate of glucose infusion = rate of glucose disposal
How long does a glucose tolerance test usually (meant to) take?
2 hours
What is the difference in blood glucose levels between a normal person, and a type-2 diabetic during the oral glucose tolerance test?
A type-2 diabetic will have a greater spike than a normal person, and will take a lot longer for their blood glucose level to return to normal.
