Sex and Motivation Flashcards
What percentage of Canadian teens have had sex? How long has this been a trend?
30% by 17, 70% by 18-19, 90s
Who was the first (single) pioneer of sexual studies? What misconceptions did he alleviate?
Kinsey (40s): Women enjoyed sex in a similar way to men
Name the 4 stages of sexual response outlined by M/J
- Excitement: increased heart rate, breathing, etc. Vasocongestion - engorgement of blood vessels results in erections and clitoral strengthening
- Plateau: building excitement, slower pace
- Orgasm: muscle contractions, peak intensity
- Resolution: subsides, men enter refractory period
How do men and women experience orgasms differently. How does this change with age?
Men: (between 35-39) 75% reported one
Women: (same) only 28%!
(this is “all the time”)
This widens over time
Why might men experience more orgasms?
- Need to to produce more offspring
2. women have sexual scripts that suck
Give a high level overview of parental investment theory
The sex with the lower investment for producing offspring will compete for the one that has the greater investment (men for women). Basically, women need to rear children so are choosier with competent mates. Men are looking for healthier (more attractive) mates
What fate awaits men according to PI theory?
Reproductive potential is maxed out with the most amount of mates, will be more interested in sex
Explain how sex works as a motive
Technically a biological need, but you won’t die without it. Instead is linked with a plethora of things like family, careers, art. So also social
What are some alternate explanations to why women desire stable, competent partners?
- this could be a recent trend from the emergence of capitalism
- Women have been held back economically for centuries
What is the refractory period for men? How does it change?
Time between ability to have orgasms. Increases with age.
What hormones regulate desire/arousal?
Estrogen and Androgen (testosterone). Men and women have both, just in different levels
What’s the deal with pheremones?
We don’t really know much about them. Basically chemicals that are detected sensorially
What’s up with aphrodisiacs?
Nothing
What’s the Coolidge effect? What does it imply?
phenomenon of someone getting revived sexual interest when getting new partner (Ethan effect) . Sometimes elimination of refractory period
Can you guess what increased sexual desire is based off of?
Attractiveness
