Mercantilism
Economic theory that is designed to maximize the exports and minimize the imports for an economy
Chesapeake Colonies
Settled by join-stock ventures (young, single men) for commercial agriculture. Most were indentured servants
Indentured servants
A worker under contract for about 3-7 years in exchange for transportation, food, clothing, etc. (Not slavery)
New England Colonies
Originally settled for religious reasons. Entire families moved. Set up independent “Democratic” town governments.
New England Farms (Subsistence Farming)
To get by, not get rich, grew food for families.
Major New England Exports
Fish, Livestock, Timber, mixed goods
Merchant Elite
Rich business men Biggest hub was Boston to Philly to NY. Created Wealth gap
Middle Colonies
Produced most of the food for colonies. Port cities were NYC and Philly. Merchants dominated. Most were Quakers
Breadbasket Colonies
Middle Colonies
Quakers
religion devoted to peace, and prosperity.
Southern Colonies
Slavery. Warm climate. Made growing cash crops easy. Tobacco, Indigo Rice.
Cash Crop
For sale/profit, requires a large labor force (Indentured servants or slaves),
Yeoman Farmers
Lower/Middle class white men without slaves. Smaller areas of land
The Middle Passage
Africa to America, slave leg of triangular trade.
Salutary Neglect
ignoring or looking the other way when things benefited you (What Britain did to Early America)
