Militia (Minute Men)
troops that can be ready in a minute during the revolution
Southern Strategy
a plan implemented by the British during the Revolutionary War to win the conflict by concentrating their forces in the southern states of Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia.
Northern Strategy
British planned to separate New England from the other colonies
Battle of Lexington
GB troops got there at 5 am, 50-70 militiamen met them. Shot heard around the world, no one know who shot. British continued to Concord.
Battle of Concord
4,000 militiamen met British. British forced back to Boston, harassed whole way there. True turning point.
Battle of Bunker hill
Symbolic win for Patriots (proved they could hold their own against GB). On northern hills of Boston overlooking city. British technically won.
Battle of Trenton
George Washington crossed the Delaware river with troops, defeated Hessian, first victory, boosted morale.
Battle of Saratoga
British planned to cut off New England at the Hudson River. Continental Army defeated them. A REAL American victory, turning point in attitudes home and abroad.

France officially signed alliance with Patriots (rebels)
Valley Forge
Winter camp of the Continental Army. Poorly funded, shortage of everything.
Battle of Yorktown
Unofficially ended revolution (treaties end wars). George Washington with help of French Navy made a siege around the British.
Second Continental Congress
Divided for separation, most wanted independence, drafted a separation document, (declaration of independence)
Enlightenment Ideals
natural law, liberty, progress, toleration, fraternity, constitutional government, and the formal separation of church and state.
Natural Rights
John Locke’s ideas of life, Liberty and property.
Social Contract
the idea that government exists with consent of the governed that led the revolutionaries to break free of Britain.
Thomas Paine - Common Sense
Explained the issues between colonies and Britain. Argued for separation in a way that common people could understand.
Thomas Jefferson - Declaration of Independence
Main Author, expressed ideals of Americans, wrote “self evident truths”

Writer of the separation document (declaration of independence)

Leader of Continental Army in the revolution (led to victory), future president of USA
Women in Revolution
Kept things going on the home front. Took over jobs that soldiers would normally do.

Britain recognizes American independence. Border est. Mississippi. GB withdrawal troops. Loyalists forgiven
Treaty of Paris 1783 : Indians
Not consulted. Not recognized as players. No peace for natives.
