Setting Flashcards
What is the setting of the city ?
Victorian London
How does Steve don use two contrasting settings to symbolize the contrasting personalities within Jeykll?
- ‘general cleanliness and gaiety of note’
- ‘ sinister block of buildings’
In his setting of the scene Stevenson repeatedly uses contrast to emphasise the frightening sinister atmosphere
When describing Utterson and Enfields walk he uses a plethora of positive imagery which is emphasized by ‘above qoute’
However this is in stark contrast to
the ‘sinister block of buildings’
Use of alliteration here to emphasis ‘above qoute’
How can we analyze Utterson dream ? ( yep this can be a setting point)
Utterson lay ‘tossed in the gross darkness of the room’
His dreams quickly turns bad as he sees a sinister shape ‘ glide more stealthily.. through wider labyrinths of a map lighted city’
The idea as describing it as a labyrinth or maze and narrow, lamp lit streets and alleyways of London evoke a very sinister and haunting atmosphere for the reader
Dream can be viewed as indicative as the inciting incident of the novella
How does Stevson use the setting of London to mirror the mysterious and untrustworthy behaviour of characters ?
Pathetic fallacy is used to convey the evil potent ion behind the doors of the unpleasant streets of London where Hyde lives
‘Great chocolate covered pall’ makes the sunlight ‘ strange’ and ‘ haggard’
- symbolically suggesting the dog falls over the city and obliterates the sunlight
- fog is representative of Jekyll himself as the ‘evil’ side of human nature that prevents people from living good and honest lives
- the smoke filled fog is also symbolic of the Industrial Revolution as it is conveyed antipastorally to make it appear negative
- furthermore the fog itself adds to the dramatic and unsettling atmosphere as the fog covers objects and obscured people from view
