A Victorian reader would of been far more familiar with this biblical doctrine of inherent sin
So this would create fear as Victorian readers would be concerned that they too could be capable of such evil

What is the biggest direct biblical references ?

A

Utterson chapter 1 ‘ I incline to Cains heresy…. I let my brother go to the devil in his own way’
- Cain and Abel were brothers and Cain killed Abel as he was jealous of him
- Cains reply to god mimics Utterson own line as this reinforces the point that he doesn’t monitor his friends and their action but leaves them alone
- deeper meaning is that the two opposing forces of good and evil are presented by Abel(good) and Cain(bad) just like we see in Jeykll and Hyde
- murder also foreshadows Carews death

A

‘ really like Satan’
He is also described as having ‘ devilish fury’ by Jeykll himself in chapter ten
- Devil tempted eve with sin just like how Hyde tempts Jeykll with evil and taboo temptations that he gives into
